IRISH GENEALOGY FOR YOU
Marie McGuinness
Every Family has a self-declared Family Historian who loves to search out the lost and hidden Family members and stories. In about 1992, I became that person and with no Internet, no Mobile phones and no real clue, I set of searching reels, cards, indexes and Public Record Ledgers.
I had some of the story correct but I also had the romantic add-ons and the less likely add-ons like ‘They were coming back on the return journey of the Titanic’,- the truth was that person didn’t make a return journey until 1952!
If you are the Family nominee, you will already know that these searches are not simple. But, they are exciting and frustrating at the same time and once you get started, you are gripped by the Genealogy Bug.
I am not a stranger to Research, having completed 2 Academic Thesis’s in non-related topics and using the skills I developed during that work has been very beneficial to me in organising and focusing my genealogy research undertakings.
I decided to add to this and to improve on my ‘self-taught’ genealogy research skill-set, I went on to complete a Diploma in Genealogy in 2020 and this was a great addition when I went to assist others in recent years with their searches with great results.
The Genealogy Bug
So, over several years, and with some very late nights, I discovered that my Maternal Great-Grand-Parents had settled in Connecticut, USA – not Canada as we thought, although they did go to Canada. I also made 2 trips from Ireland to USA to search various State and local records and was hoping to find relatives and this eventually led me to the door of my ‘second cousins’ in Connecticut.
I thought I knew all about my Paternal side as there are several generations in two neighbouring graveyards but when I went to draw up the Family Tree, the records were uncovered, and the fun began again. There are family members in Melbourne and in Chicago!
And so here I am, hoping to assist you to find your Ancestors. I have thoroughly enjoyed my own journey and the journey of others and really look forward to the next adventure.
